James' RGA Story

Residential Services

James has always been an advocate at heart, but public speaking was his Achilles’ heel. That all changed when he decided to travel to Springfield to speak to Illinois legislators about increasing wages for Direct Support Professionals (DSPs). Despite being unable to read, James practiced his talking points diligently, ensuring his message was clear and impactful. “I learned a lot,” he says, reflecting on his experience. He spoke with confidence and helped legislators understand the critical need for better wages. “I think I helped,” he adds with a proud smile.

But James’ accomplishments didn’t stop there. A few months ago, he earned his fourth-degree black belt in karate! “I worked very hard to get it,” he shares. Now, he’s setting his sights on the fifth degree, ready to master new techniques and refine his skills.

James is excited about the future. He plans to return to Springfield, eager to continue his advocacy work. RGA’s residential services fill his home life with opportunities for growth and learning. “My future is looking good to me,” he says, brimming with optimism.

James’ story is a powerful reminder that age is just a number, and with determination and support, anything is possible.
