How Medicaid Cuts Harm Our Nation's Disability Services
As Congress deliberates national priorities and funding allocations, Ray Graham Association is calling on community members to advocate for the protection of Medicaid, a vital resource for individuals with disabilities.
Medicaid provides essential support for people with disabilities, covering critical medical equipment, therapies, and daily care services that enable them to thrive. With Congress currently making significant decisions about the nation's priorities and budget, it is crucial that the voices of individuals with disabilities and their supporters are heard.
Medicaid is not just a safety net; it provides a comprehensive array of services that enable individuals with disabilities to live full and independent lives. These services include:
- Early intervention therapies for infants and toddlers
- Nursing, personal assistance, day programs, and group homes that support community living
- Essential items not covered by insurance, such as equipment for daily living, mobility, and communication
- School-based health, mental health, and therapy services
- Healthcare services for children and adults with disabilities
In Illinois, the reliance on Medicaid is significant:
- 1 out of 3 adults with disabilities rely on Medicaid.
- 3 out of 8 children rely on Medicaid.
- 222,693 Illinoisans with disabilities receive home and community-based services.
- $21 billion in federal funding supports these services.
- 16,589 Illinoisans with disabilities are on the waiting list for services.
- 3,438,447 Illinoisans are covered by Medicaid
Ray Graham Association, in alignment with national advocacy efforts led by organizations like The Arc and ANCOR, emphasizes the urgent need for voters to contact their representatives and senators. By sending a clear message to Congress, the disability community can play a vital role in ensuring that Medicaid remains a priority.
People with disabilities depend on government spending for their health, education, and living needs.
