Stephanie's Medicaid Story

"My sister Stephanie is 66 years old, and she has a diagnosis of Moderate IDD, Bipolar mood disorder, Seizure disorder, abnormal gait, Hypertension, Edema, Hypothyroidism, communicative disorder, strabismus, onychomycosis, peripheral venous Insufficiency, Hemarthrosis, Adenomatous Colorectal Polyps.

Before moving to the Ray Graham Association, my sister lived at home, where I remember she learned the address of our childhood home by singing our address as she jumped rope. Stephanie was born with no complications before delivery; during delivery, she was born with the umbilical cord wrapped around her neck. No initial problems were noted at this time, as she progressed normally.

Around age 10, Stephanie began having seizures. She also began exhibiting severe behaviors, and throughout the years, she started receiving services at John J. Madden Mental Health Center, Dixon State School, and Dugdale Circle. Stephanie began receiving services at Ray Graham Association in 1991 and attends RGA Adult Day Services Monday through Friday.

Stephanie has had struggles medically throughout her life. As she is getting older, Medicaid is needed. Without Medicaid, she would be unable to afford the necessary medications, specialists, labs, support for daily living needs, and a living environment that will help her live a long, meaningful life.

Medicaid is more than just a program for Stephanie; it is a lifeline that brings her hope and stability. As she gets older, her needs may change. Medicaid is crucial for my sister and others who face financial challenges."

Why Medicaid Is Important to Stephanie:

"Stephanie has many medical needs that require continuous follow-up care from physicians. Medicaid provides access to many health services she needs, such as doctor visits, preventative care, and treatments.

For people like Stephanie and our family, this access is vital for maintaining her health and managing her diagnosis, as described above. Medicaid reduces the cost burden significantly, which will help Stephanie afford the necessary treatments and medications she needs."

What Does Dwight Fear About Medicaid Cuts?

"We fear that with the cuts, people will not seek medical help because of the cost of healthcare. Also, my sister will not be able to get the care and treatment that she needs."
